AFL to NFL

New York Jets 7We are starting to see more players make the switch from AFL to the American Football League (NFL). The last AFL player to become an NFL punter was Ben Graham from Geelong. Graham signed a shot-term contract with the New York Jets in January 2005. After a year at the Hofstra University training camp, he was signed as the punter for the 2005 NFL season with the New York Jets on a six-year, 5.17 million dollar contract.

He wasn’t the first Aussie to make the move and he will definitely not be the last. He is the third person after Colin Ridgeway and Darren Bennett to play both AFL and NFL football. These Australians are being scouted by large NFL clubs for their extremely powerful and accurate kicking techniques which they have mastered from kicking the larger and rounder Australian Football.

The latest Aussie to consider a move to the NFL is North Melbourne Full Forward, Sav Rocca. Rocca has been working on a tape to send to NFL clubs in hope of winning a trial next season. At 32, he would be starting to think about finishing up his AFL career, the move to the States and an NFL career would be the perfect opportunity.

At a recent free-agent tryout camp in Florida, the top-ranked punter Jeff Gomulinksi punted a ball 63 meters with a hang time of 4.6 seconds. With minimal training using the NFL ball, Sav Rocca can already punt the ball beyond 64 meters with an average hang time of 4.5 seconds. Comparable with NFL standards.

For the AFL players who have a massive kick and are coming to the end of their AFL career, a $1 million dollar a year contract for the next 10 years would sound extremely tempting.

Round 17 - NAB Rising Star: Andrew Swallow

Andrew SwallowSpits has earned this weeks NAB rising star nomination after a solid performance against Geelong on the weekend. He picked up 25 possessions which helped the Roos to win their last ever game at Manuka oval.

After playing for East Fremantle, he was chosen at number 43 in the 2005 NAB Draft. He aimed to play 5 senior games in 2006, he has now player 7 games, averaging 11 possessions per game and managing to kick a few goals too.

MOTY 2006

There have been a few absolute ripper marks taken this year. During Round 16, we saw another - Daniel Kerr took a screamer in the goal square against Collingwood.

There is some stiff competition this year for MOTY. If you had to pick the winner tomorrow, who would it be? I’m finding it hard to choose between Kerr and Ottens, both took superb marks.

Where to for Aker?

Jason AkermanisWho else is sick of hearing about Jason Akermanis? I know I am. But I must admit, after all the controversy which has surrounded him, I’m interested to see where he will end up next year.

So, it’s most likely he will be heading to a Melbourne based club. But who is going to give up a low pick in the “super draft” to get this bloke? I think the four clubs who would be willing to trade are Western Bulldogs, Essendon, Collingwood and Melbourne. Hawthorn and Richmond may try and snap him up, but I don’t think they would be willing to part with their draft picks.

It would be a tough decision for any club to make, but in the end, he’s still a 3 time AA, Brownlow Medalist and Premiership player - he would be a handy addition to any side in the competition.

I’ve read through different blogs and forums, and obviously there is a mixed reaction among the supporters. If you had the power to get him, would you want Akermanis at your club?

Gardiner Suspended Indefinitely

Michael Gardiner, who crashed his car at around 11:30pm last night into two parked cars has been suspended indefinitely by the West Coast Eagles.

Crashed Car

He was breathalyzed at the scene and not charged, it is believed that the accident may have been caused by excessive speed.

It’s a shame it happened. He has worked hard to get back into the side after being banished to the WAFL 2 months ago by Worsfold. He is either incredibly unlucky or incredibly stupid.

Personally, I don’t think he will be at the club next year. There has been way too many incident’s, he has already used up his last chance.
